Porcelain veneers are among the most popular options for improving the appearance of teeth, with a very conservative procedure.
If you’ve ever wondered how veneers work, think of this quote. Although Aristotle was referring to philosophy when he uttered these famous words, the statement applies to many things, including the science of veneers. Multiple thin layers of a given material are stronger than a solid block. That is why the technique of veneering – which involves applying a thin layer to the surface of something for cosmetic improvement – is so very efficient.
In dentistry, a veneer refers to a layer of porcelain or composite material fixed to the visible surface of a tooth. It can correct any number of cosmetic complaints, as well as some minor tooth damage. Because the veneer is so thin, it requires very little tooth preparation. Yet, due to the strength of layering, it is quite durable.
The first step is a consultation with Dr. Bruyere. He will perform an examination to ensure that you are a suitable candidate. Veneers are an excellent solution for most people with good oral health. They may be used to correct:
If you are unhappy with the appearance of your smile, the answer to this question is probably, “yes.” However, if your concerns extend beyond cosmetic, Dr. Bruyere may recommend alternate or additional treatments. Because veneers are very thin, they cannot be used to replace a significant portion of the tooth structure.
Broken or badly decayed teeth are better treated with sturdier restorations, such as crowns. Additionally, if you currently have periodontal disease, it should be addressed for the sake of your oral health, as well as the longevity of veneers or other cosmetic dental work.
Dr. Bruyere creates cosmetic restorations with precision and great attention to detail. He begins with a consultation. He will perform an examination, listen to your concerns and goals, then discuss all available options. If you and the doctor decide that veneers are right for you, the process will be completed in three steps.
Planning – The doctor will take impressions and create a wax replica of your smile. This is used to create a mock up, giving you a preview of the final result. The design is refined and perfected according to your esthetic preferences. This serves as a template for your new veneers.
Preparation – During the next appointment, your teeth are shaped and prepared. A local anesthetic may be used, but it is often unnecessary. Veneers are extremely thin, so very little enamel is removed. Therefore, the preparation process is fast, gentle, and comfortable. When it is complete, the doctor will take a new set of impressions, to ensure precision accuracy. Temporary veneers are placed at this time.
Placement – Your new veneers are crafted by a quality dental laboratory, which takes approximately three weeks. When they are ready, you will return to our office for your final appointment. After removing the temporaries, Dr. Bruyere will check the appearance and fit of your new veneers. They are then bonded, cured, and finally polished.
