One method of covering imperfections of the smile is with veneers. Veneers, which may be referred to as dental veneers or porcelain veneers, are ceramic facings custom-made for patients. They are bonded on the front of teeth to disguise a problem, which may include permanent staining, breakage, cracks, unusually shaped teeth, gaps between teeth, or a tooth that is misaligned. At the practice of Clint Bruyere, DDS, patients in and around Longview, Texas can learn about this cosmetic procedure and whether it is right for them.
Patients must be appropriate candidates for porcelain veneers before they continue with the process. Individuals who may not be deemed a good fit for veneers are patients with periodontal disease, cavities, large fillings in the front teeth, or those who have teeth significantly misaligned. There are alternatives for these patients to consider which is why we highly recommend speaking with a dental professional about candidacy during an initial consultation appointment.
One aspect of veneers often brought up by patients is the cost. Cost of porcelain veneers can vary dramatically depending on several different factors, so this is why a quote is given during the consultation visit after an examination. There are some dental insurance companies that may provide partial coverage, which can reduce the out-of-pocket costs for many of our patients.
The veneer process starts with the examination and determination of candidacy. Once patients have decided veneers are right for them, they begin the preparations. This requires removal of a very thin portion of enamel from the front of the tooth. The dentist will file down the enamel to eliminate the possibility of added bulk once the veneer is placed. Impressions are made, and these molds are sent to a dental laboratory where a ceramist will fabricate the final veneer based on the dentist’s specifications of color, shape, and size. Patients return to the practice after about three weeks to have their final restoration bonded in place. This completes the process for the placement of a porcelain veneer.
