Dental crowns enable us to restore teeth at the front or the back of the mouth so they function and look like natural teeth. Generally, crowns are used when a tooth has become severely worn, is discolored from the inside out, has been broken, or has been treated with root canal therapy. The products and materials that we recommend will differ based on the extent of damage, the desired esthetic, and on the location of the tooth.

Posterior (back) teeth may be fitted with:

• Porcelain-fused-to-metal
• Full gold
• Full Zirconia
• e-Max® porcelain crown (not for people who clench or grind their teeth)

Anterior (front) teeth may be fitted with:

• e-Max® porcelain
• Empress® porcelain
• Zirconia with porcelain
• Porcelain-fused-to-metal

When crafting crowns for front teeth, the goal is to recreate the characteristics of natural enamel. Shading, translucency, light reflection, and texture are aspects that we consider when restoring visible teeth with crowns.

What to expect

Crown treatment takes place over two office visits. The first focuses on removing damaged tooth structure and preparing the tooth for the crown. Our treatment plan is facilitated with impressions and imaging, if necessary, which are used to create a model for the crown. The prepared tooth is covered with a temporary crown, and the second visit is scheduled for about ten days later. 

Placing the crown involves removing the temporary and cleaning all cement away from the gums and enamel. We assess the final crown for fit over the damaged tooth, as well as against the opposing tooth. If needed, small revisions can be made to achieve the ideal fit. When we have achieved this, the crown is affixed with strong dental cement, which should stabilize the restoration for many years.

Good hygiene is important to the longevity of dental crowns. This includes brushing, flossing, and routine dental check-ups, which work together to inhibit the development of decay or gum disease around the base of the crown.
