Crowns and bridges go hand in hand, but are intended for very different purposes. A dental bridge is an excellent treatment option for patients who have lost a natural tooth and who are either not a good candidate for, or do not want, dental implants. The majority of patients needing tooth replacement for one or just a few teeth feel confident choosing a fixed dental bridge to support chewing and speaking function.
A dental bridge is a single fixture that looks like three or more individual teeth. The two outer “teeth” are crowns. They are fitted over the teeth that are adjacent to the gap. The “tooth” in the middle is called a pontic. This artificial tooth has a solid core, and it sits on top of the gums. It is anchored in place by the crowned teeth.
Patients of Dr. Bruyere can rest assured that they have options when it comes to their dental care. Bridges are often made using high quality porcelain. This material is optimal for its strength, as well as its similarities to natural enamel. When you wear this restoration, you want your replacement teeth to look and feel like the real thing!
In addition to restoring the beauty of your smile, a well-fitting dental bridge also facilitates optimal chewing. If you do not fill a gap in your smile, you may feel self-conscious. You may also begin to favor the opposite side of your mouth when you chew. If this happens, the force of chewing is not evenly distributed throughout your jaw, and you may develop the uncomfortable symptoms of TMJ disorder. Additional consequences of a gap include an increased risk for plaque build-up, cavities, and gum disease. Also, surrounding teeth could shift out of place.
Fortunately, there are multiple ways to treat tooth loss today. While many of our patients inquire about dental implants for permanent replacement, there are some for whom a dental bridge makes the most sense.
