Denture patients often have many questions about the best way to adapt to, care for, and live with their new teeth.u
Eating, speaking, and other basic tasks may seem challenging at first. This is normal. Your muscles, nerves, soft tissues, and automatic reactions to stimulus have adapted to your missing, loose, or damaged teeth. Therefore, anything else will feel foreign. Don’t worry, before you know it, you will adapt to your dentures, and feel as if you’ve always worn them.
Dental materials will not decay. However, they will accumulate plaque and host harmful bacteria. If not cleaned regularly, they can accumulate hardened tartar, just like teeth. While the importance of oral hygiene remains the same, the technique is very different.
Use a denture brush with a non-abrasive toothpaste, or a cleaner formulated specifically for dentures. Be sure to clean all surfaces of the appliance, and rinse with tepid water. Never expose your dentures to extreme heat, such as boiling water. Overnight soaking solutions can help remove stains, and freshen your dentures.
As the soft tissue in your mouth conforms to the appliance, it will generally become more comfortable. However, occasionally problem areas will develop. It is not uncommon to need a few minor adjustments to a new denture. If you notice a specific spot causing a sore or other problem, give us a call and Dr. Bruyere will be happy to see you.
Excellent oral health is a team effort, and we believe in working with our patients.
