Your family dentist is a person whom you trust to help you keep your smile looking and feeling its best. In our practice, we work with patients to monitor the health of teeth and gums, and keep oral bacteria at bay with professional dental cleanings. We guide patients in the area of oral hygiene so that teeth can be kept healthy in between visits, as well. Though these are standard aspects of dentistry, there is more that goes into being a great family dental practice. We understand that, to keep the smile its healthiest, each patient deserves personalized dental care from our Longview dental team; care that addresses specific needs that may arise at different stages of life.

We know from current statistics that gum disease is a growing problem in the 55 and older population. Of this age group, more than half are affected by some degree of gum disease. Gum recession, as well, is a problem more commonly experienced in the older age bracket. During dental check-ups, Dr. Bruyere and his team carefully evaluate teeth and all oral tissues, seeking to identify potential problems so that early treatment can be started.

With every year of life, the body experiences biological changes. With age comes the decrease of natural collagen production and the increase in fine lines and wrinkles. The process of aging also impacts oral health, as oral tissues are responsive to the various chemical changes that occur in the body. For instance, one study identified a chemical, Del-1, as important to the development, or prevention of, gum disease. When this chemical naturally declines, according to the study in Nature Immunology, the risk of gum disease increases.

Aging is not something we can avoid. What we can do, however, is guard our own health and wellbeing by understanding what our body needs during the different stages of life. Oral health is something we can promote by making healthy lifestyle choices like avoiding tobacco products and limiting sugary foods and beverages. Consuming raw fruits and vegetables that naturally clean teeth, such as broccoli, and adding in plenty of calcium-rich foods, we give our teeth and gums the best chance for long lasting health.

Dr. Bruyere is an experienced dentist who understands the various dental problems that may occur throughout life. Many of our younger patients may need evaluation for braces, or need sports guards for athletics. Pregnant women may need closer monitoring of gum health, as hormonal fluctuations can increase the risk of gum disease. Older patients may struggle with dry mouth as a result of certain medications. These are issues with which your dentist is familiar, and can provide outstanding treatment.
